It’s the beginning of the month of August. The days have been getting more and more pleasant. There is almost always a breeze blowing away the last remnants of the stifling heat from the summer months. The sun is hidden by the clouds that begin to gather. These ominous clouds bring with them rain from hundreds of kilometers away. The pregnant clouds unload halfway across the Indian peninsula. The rains are heavy. Getting caught in a thunderstorm
in India is akin to being pelted with thousands of water balloons. You get drenched within the first 20 seconds. Rain has always been good for the dry, parched land that always seems to want more.
The rains, as great as they are, take on a different twist for us at the WCOI(World Cassette Outreach of India) headquarters. Our office lies six feet below the level of the street. When it rains, the water begins its annual trek onto our campus. This is not just rain water but the rain water that has been cleaning the road outside. We have been flooded many times in the past and so to help us stay “dry” we built a tank into which the water is diverted. An electric
pump is then started that pumps the water back out onto the street. Now, this is not an ideal solution by any stretch of the imagination. We have been able to manage mainly because the pump works faster in pumping the water out than the rain does in bringing water in. This is a battle that the pump wins about 60% of the time. The other 40% keeps us up at night. We pray that the rains will let up just long enough for us to keep ahead. Also, another wrinkle thrown into this mix is that when it rains heavily, the city shuts off the power! This makes sure that our advantage with the electric pump is neutralized. We are forced to rely on a kerosene pump that does not work as hard.
This scenario is an annual predicament that we have faced. This last summer, we were almost flooded on two separate occasions. There is also mold that has made itself quite welcome inside the living quarters. We long for a day when we can lay back on a stormy night and enjoy the August breeze again.
The Ministry Center in India has been a dream that we hope God helps us realize in the coming year. We are not a ministry that focuses on building “buildings.” In fact, this is real a brave new venture for all of us. The building that we hope to construct will raise our current facility off the ground, so when the rain waters do come, we do not have to worry about it getting into our facilities. In addition to negating the flood waters, the building would also help us in hosting our national and international guests. We would also be able to finally provide decent housing for our watchman (who currently has none). This ministry center will also have in it facilities to provide training for pastors and hold meetings for people who come to know the Lord and seek to grow deeper in the faith.
There are so many more reasons why we need to get this going but I think you can get the idea. Please pray with us and join us as we seek to help our brothers and sisters in India do ministry more effectively.
