The Need:
The Mwani, or Namwani, people of northern Mozambique are one of the "least reached" people groups in the country. Tradition says that the entire Mwani tribe converted to Islam over 1000 years ago in order to protect themselves from from the Arab slave traders(who were not allowed to enslave followers of Islam).

For the past 1000 years the Mwani people have remained nearly exclusively followers of Islam.  Children are sent to Islamic schools where some learn to read Arabic and memorize the Qur'an.  Despite this education, most people do not truly understand Islam and it has become mixed with many traditional beliefs and animistic practices.

The word "Mwani" in their own language literally translates to beach, which aptly describes where this people group is located.  The Mwani people inhabit a relatively narrow swath of coastline between the cities of Pemba and Mocimboa da Praia.  Most Mwani people are poor and derive their living from the sea(fishing, transporting via boat, trading, etc)

While literacy in Arabic is between 30-40%, literacy in their own heart language is almost non-existent.  ASM, in partnership with Estudio Coroa da Victoria, is planning to distribute the first Scripture recordings ever available to the Mwani people.  In 2011 ASM is hoping to do an initial distribution of 200 digital audio Bibles in the Mwani language.  If you are interested in helping ASM fund this project, click here.
